David Beckham said he would be very disappointed if his
England career ended without a trophy to show for it.
"People have asked, 'Would you consider yourself a failure
if you didn't win anything with England?'," said the 30-year-old
captain.
"I'd never think that, but I'd think I've missed out.
Winning something with England is a massive thing for me."
"To be part of that, winning a major competition -
especially when you see our fans - would be special for me."
Beckham added that the future looked bright for England,
after a number of inexperienced players helped the national side to
victories over the United States and Colombia during the recent tour of
the US.
"The tour has been very good. There are a lot of young
players in the team and they have shown the manager what they can do,"
said the Real Madrid star.
"It's not my decision whether one or two go the World Cup
but I am sure the performances of the young lads have shown the manager
what they are about.
"They have done really well. They have shown in the last
two games how good they are and that we have got great talent coming
through in England."
Joe Cole was one of the young stars to shine in the recent
friendlies.
The Chelsea star said he was slightly mystified to be
labelled as one of England's most improved players.
"It makes people think 'he wasn't much of a player before'
- and I had achieved a lot in my career before the season had even
started," said Cole.
"Yes, I have certainly come on as a player - but I was
captain of West Ham at the age of 20 and it's not like there have been
massive changes.
"I think it is just a gradual thing. I have put a lot of
hard work into my game and it is nice to be finally getting some rewards
for it.
"If the boss (Eriksson) sees me as the most improved
player, then I'm happy with that and as long as I get the shirt to play,
then I'm happy."
