Beckham set to open soccer school

Friday, 11 March 2005

England captain David Beckham will open the first of his international soccer schools near the Millennium Dome.

He will visit the site on the Greenwich peninsula in south-east London, on Monday to unveil the plans.

The Real Madrid star will be joined by pupils from his former school, Chase Lane Junior in Chingford, who are among those set to benefit.

When his playing career ends, the 29-year-old has said he will work on the scheme rather than manage a team.

A spokesman said Beckham hopes to open another school in Los Angeles and ultimately wants to offer training to children at every school in Britain.

It is thought coaches will train boys and girls aged up to 15.

In December, Beckham told French television station Canal Plus: "I am not interested in being a coach but I would like to have football schools.

"I have wanted to do that since I went to the Bobby Charlton school. I'm going to open one in London and one in LA."
