Beckham benched over poor training
S unday,
19 December 2004
David Beckham was dropped for Real Madrid's game with Racing
Santander because he hadn't trained well, team coach Mariano Garcia
Remon said.
Beckham was replaced by teenager Javi Garcia on Saturday and watched
Madrid's 3-2 win from the bench. Brazil left back Roberto Carlos also was
rested.
"Roberto Carlos and Beckham haven't trained well and I felt they
shouldn't play. I pick the team (based on its) work during the week and
this was my ideal team," Garcia Remon was quoted as saying by sports daily
Marca on Sunday.
"In addition, these two players (Beckham and Roberto Carlos) have
been carrying slight injuries and all this led me to decide on my
starting line-up," Garcia Remon said.
Beckham, who has struggled to
find his form this season, has played in 11 of the team's 16 league games,
including last weekend's encounter with Real Sociedad which was abandoned
with seven minutes remaining due to a bomb hoax. The game will resume on
Jan. 5
